Pay: $28–$33/hour, based on experience

Full-time | Four 10-hour shifts | Rotating Saturdays

Old Derby Animal Hospital is growing, and we are looking for an experienced Veterinary Technician to join our team as we add another DVM and expand our services.

This is an opportunity for a technician who wants to be highly utilized and practice at the top of their skill set. Our hospital provides elevated general practice medicine alongside advanced inpatient services, giving technicians the opportunity to build and use skills in anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, complex diagnostics, ultrasound, laparoscopy, endoscopy, chemotherapy, and more.

We primarily care for dogs and cats, with some small mammal patients.

Why Join Old Derby?

Work at the top of your skill set.
Our technicians are highly utilized and trusted to use their knowledge and clinical judgment. We want you to understand not only how to perform a technical skill, but why you are doing it and how it impacts the patient.

A collaborative, respectful medical team.
Our DVMs value and respect their technicians. You'll have opportunities for collaboration, coaching, and professional development while working with a team that takes pride in maintaining high standards.

A team that shares the workload.
Everyone contributes. Our team values accountability, ownership, reliability, and supporting one another through busy days. We work hard, but we also enjoy working together.

A hospital where people stay.
Old Derby has an experienced team with strong tenure, including technicians who have been with the hospital for 5–20 years. This is a place where you can build a long-term career.

Investment in your growth.
We provide paid CE hours and a CE budget, and we support technicians who want to continue developing their clinical skills and take on new responsibilities.

Low-stress patient care.
We practice Fear Free and low-stress handling techniques and prioritize creating a positive experience for our patients, clients, and team.

What You'll Do

Your responsibilities will vary between inpatient and outpatient care, allowing you to build relationships with patients and clients while developing advanced technical skills.

Depending on your experience and interests, you may:

  • Place IV catheters, induce and intubate patients, and manage anesthesia through recovery
  • Monitor and interpret ECG, SpO₂, ETCO₂, blood pressure, temperature, and other patient parameters
  • Develop and manage anesthesia and pain-control protocols
  • Provide perioperative nursing care and support patients through recovery
  • Assist with routine and advanced surgical procedures
  • Support laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures
  • Perform dental procedures including dental radiography, scaling, polishing, and complete dental charting
  • Assist with complex diagnostics and ultrasound procedures
  • Provide inpatient nursing care and fluid therapy
  • Prepare patients, surgical suites, and equipment while maintaining appropriate sterile technique
  • Maintain accurate anesthesia, treatment, and medical records
  • Communicate patient updates and recommendations effectively with the veterinary team
  • Provide clients with clear discharge instructions and education
  • Rotate through outpatient care, assisting with appointments and building client relationships
  • Share knowledge and support the development of other members of the technician team

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an experienced technician who can confidently step into a busy hospital environment and contribute from day one.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Strong hands-on experience with inpatient care, surgery, and anesthesia
  • Confidence managing anesthesia and recognizing changes in patient status
  • A solid understanding of fluid therapy, pain management, and perioperative patient care
  • Experience with dentistry and dental radiography
  • Strong technical skills and an understanding of the clinical reasoning behind those skills
  • CVT, LVT, or RVT credentialing preferred, but not required
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • A calm, organized approach in a busy clinical environment
  • A willingness to rotate between inpatient and outpatient care
  • A team-oriented mindset and a commitment to accountability and high standards

This is a full-time position, scheduled as four 10-hour shifts per week with rotating Saturday shifts, approximately one Saturday shift every two months.

Technicians rotate through both inpatient and outpatient care as part of the regular schedule.
