Hands-on Veterinary Student Externship

Prairie Animal Hospital | North Prairie, Wisconsin

Build your skills. Explore your interests. Prepare for your future in veterinary medicine.

Ready to take your veterinary education beyond the classroom? Join Prairie Animal Hospital for an externship experience where you can learn from practicing veterinarians, expand your clinical knowledge, and gain valuable insight into the day-to-day life of a small-animal veterinarian.

Located in North Prairie, Wisconsin, Prairie Animal Hospital has been serving pets and their families since 1988. Our team is committed to compassionate, comprehensive veterinary care and exceptional client service. We believe an externship should be more than a line on your résumé—it should be an opportunity to ask questions, explore your interests, and grow your confidence as a future veterinarian.

Why Choose Prairie Animal Hospital?

Learn Alongside Practicing Veterinarians

Work with supervising veterinarians as they evaluate patients, discuss diagnostic findings, develop treatment plans, and make clinical decisions. Bring your questions, share your interests, and learn how classroom concepts translate into real-world patient care.

Explore a Variety of General Practice Cases

From preventive care and wellness visits to medical concerns that require further investigation, general practice offers an opportunity to see the many ways veterinarians support pets throughout their lives. Develop a broader understanding of patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.

Gain Exposure to Medicine, Surgery, and Dentistry

Discover how different areas of veterinary medicine work together to support patient health. Depending on the caseload and your learning goals, you may have opportunities to observe or assist with surgical and dental procedures, diagnostics, and ongoing medical management.

Strengthen Your Clinical Reasoning

Learn to think through cases with a supervising veterinarian, consider diagnostic options, interpret findings, and understand how treatment recommendations are tailored to each patient and client.

Develop Your Communication Skills

Excellent veterinary care takes a team. Build your understanding of client education, treatment discussions, and collaboration with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, and other support staff.

What You May Experience

Your externship will be shaped by your educational goals, experience level, and the hospital's schedule. Learning opportunities may include:

  • Gathering patient histories and participating in physical examinations.
  • Discussing diagnostic testing and interpreting results with supervising veterinarians.
  • Exploring treatment planning and medical case management.
  • Observing and assisting with surgical and dental procedures.
  • Learning about preventive medicine, wellness care, and client education.
  • Following cases to better understand treatment response and follow-up recommendations.
  • Practicing professional communication and teamwork in a clinical setting.
  • Learning about the daily workflow and operations of a community veterinary hospital.

Hands-on participation will depend on your training, school requirements, patient needs, and appropriate veterinary supervision.

An Opportunity to Grow

Whether you're refining your clinical reasoning, exploring your interest in surgery, or preparing for the transition from student to associate veterinarian, your time at Prairie Animal Hospital can help you identify your strengths and the skills you'd like to develop further.

Come ready to learn, ask questions, and make the most of the experience. Our goal is to help you build a stronger foundation for your next step in veterinary medicine.
