Veterinary Student Externship

Lake Street Animal Hospital | Roselle, Illinois

Get Hands-On Experience. Build Clinical Confidence. Discover Your Future in

Veterinary Medicine.

What if your next externship could help you connect what you’ve learned in veterinary school with the real-world skills you’ll use every day as a veterinarian?

At Lake Street Animal Hospital, we want you to do more than observe. We want you to ask questions, participate in patient care, learn from experienced veterinary professionals, and gain a better understanding of what it takes to thrive in small animal practice.

Our progressive small animal hospital in Roselle, Illinois, offers veterinary students an opportunity to learn alongside a collaborative team that values high-quality medicine, compassionate patient care, and continued professional development. Whether you’re preparing for your first clinical role or exploring areas of special interest, we’ll help you make the most of your time with us.

Your Externship, Your Learning Experience

Learn by Doing

Put your veterinary education into practice in a supportive learning environment. Depending on your experience, interests, and hospital caseload, you may have opportunities to:

  • Participate in appointments, physical examinations, and patient assessments.
  • Develop your approach to diagnostic workups and treatment planning.
  • Learn how to interpret laboratory results and diagnostic imaging.
  • Observe and, when appropriate, assist with surgical and dental procedures.
  • Gain exposure to anesthesia, pain management, and patient monitoring.
  • Practice client communication and discuss treatment recommendations.
  • Participate in case discussions and learn how experienced veterinarians approach clinical challenges.

Our goal is to help you connect the science you’re learning in school with the decisions veterinarians make in everyday practice.

Hands-on activities will be tailored to your training level, hospital protocols, and applicable supervision requirements.

Learn from a Team That Loves to Teach

The people you work with can make all the difference in your externship experience. At Lake Street Animal Hospital, you’ll learn alongside experienced veterinarians and a long-tenured support team who understand the value of collaboration, communication, and sharing knowledge.

Ask questions, discuss cases, explore different approaches to patient care, and learn from the collective experience of the team. We want you to feel comfortable engaging with our doctors and staff while building the confidence to take your next steps toward becoming a veterinarian.

Explore a Variety of Medical Interests

Our hospital provides a well-equipped environment for learning about a broad range of small animal medicine and procedures.

You'll have exposure to resources and services including:

  • Five spacious exam rooms
  • In-house IDEXX diagnostic laboratory
  • Digital radiography
  • Digital dental radiography
  • Ultrasound
  • Advanced dentistry
  • Orthopedic surgery opportunities
  • Therapeutic laser technology
  • AVImark paper-lite medical records

Whether you’re interested in strengthening your general practice skills or exploring more advanced procedures, you’ll have opportunities to expand your understanding of the many directions a veterinary career can take.

Take Your Learning Beyond the Hospital

Your professional development doesn’t have to stop at the clinic doors. Lake Street Animal Hospital offers access to PetOne, NVA’s teaching and learning facility located approximately seven miles away. This additional resource provides opportunities for continuing education, hands-on training, and professional development that can complement your clinical experience and help you prepare for life after veterinary school.

Discover What a Supportive Veterinary Team Looks Like

Veterinary medicine is about more than diagnosing and treating patients. It’s also about building relationships, communicating with clients, working effectively with teammates, and providing compassionate care.

During your externship, you’ll gain insight into the day-to-day experience of practicing veterinary medicine in a collaborative hospital environment. You’ll see how doctors and support staff work together, how teams approach challenging cases, and how a positive workplace can contribute to excellent patient care.

You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about career paths in veterinary medicine, including continued clinical development and future leadership opportunities.

Could Lake Street Animal Hospital Be the Right Fit for You?

We welcome veterinary students who are curious, motivated, compassionate, and eager to learn. You don’t need to have your entire career mapped out. Bring your questions, your enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.

We’d love to help you:

  • Strengthen your clinical knowledge and practical skills.
  • Build confidence in your approach to patient care.
  • Explore different areas of small animal medicine.
  • Learn from an experienced, collaborative veterinary team.
  • Discover what you value most in your future practice.
