Ready to take the next step in your veterinary education? Join Shorewood Animal Hospital for an externship designed to help you connect classroom learning with real-world clinical experience.

Located on Milwaukee’s North Shore, Shorewood Animal Hospital is an AAHA-accredited practice committed to high-quality medical, surgical, and dental care. Our team believes in treating patients compassionately, supporting pet families, and maintaining high standards of veterinary medicine.

As an extern, you’ll have the opportunity to learn alongside practicing veterinarians, explore a variety of general practice cases, and develop a deeper understanding of the clinical decisions and teamwork that shape excellent patient care.

Why Choose Shorewood Animal Hospital?

Learn in an AAHA-Accredited Practice

Experience a hospital committed to high standards of veterinary care, continuing improvement, and compassionate treatment of patients. See how quality standards and thoughtful clinical practices contribute to the patient experience.

Build Your Clinical Skills

Work with supervising veterinarians as they evaluate patients, discuss diagnostic findings, develop treatment plans, and manage ongoing care. Bring your curiosity, ask questions, and learn how to approach cases with confidence.

Explore Medicine, Surgery, and Dentistry

Gain exposure to the different aspects of general practice, from preventive care and medical workups to dental care and surgical procedures. Discover how these services work together to support the long-term health and well-being of pets.

Learn the Importance of Client Communication

Veterinary medicine is about more than diagnosing and treating disease. Observe how veterinarians explain medical findings, discuss treatment options, educate clients, and build relationships with pet families.

Become Part of a Collaborative Team

See how veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, and client-service team members work together to deliver excellent care. Develop a stronger understanding of the roles each team member plays in a successful veterinary hospital.

What You May Experience

Your externship will be shaped around your learning goals, experience level, and the hospital’s caseload. Depending on your training and available opportunities, you may be able to:

  • Gather patient histories and participate in physical examinations.
  • Discuss diagnostic options, findings, and treatment plans with supervising veterinarians.
  • Learn about preventive medicine, wellness care, and chronic disease management.
  • Observe and assist with surgical and dental procedures.
  • Explore diagnostic testing and medical case management.

  • Strengthen your client communication and patient-care skills.
  • Gain insight into the daily workflow and operations of a general veterinary practice.

Hands-on participation will depend on your experience, school requirements, patient needs, and appropriate veterinary supervision.

An Experience Designed to Support Your Growth
